Wear Pink Day!

Carolinas HealthCare System celebrates Breast Health Awareness the entire month of October to encourage mammograms and other preventive screenings. Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer in women. The key to beating breast cancer is early detection. Women should perform monthly self-breast exams, have regular clinical breast examinations by a trained medical professional, and schedule mammograms as recommended by their provided.

Use Time Out for Prevention to schedule all recommended preventive care and screenings, including mammograms. Preventive screenings can find conditions earlier, when they are easier to treat.

Elizabeth Benfield Watson, Manager, CHS Innovation Engine

Elizabeth Benfield Watson was 30 years old when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She felt a lump during her breast self-exam and told her doctor. Breast cancer knows no age. Ask your doctor if you should get screened. “It can happen to anyone. It’s very important to get screened.” Learn more about Elizabeth's story.

Teresa Jelen, MHR, BSN, RN, Director of Perioperative Services, CHS Lincoln

Teresa Jelen was 48 years old, a divorced mother of two, working full-time when she was diagnosed with Stage II, triple negative breast cancer. My routine mammogram in February 2015 was normal, and exactly one year later, I found a lump. The mammogram confirmed there were changes. I feel lucky it was caught early. “One would have thought my highest concern was the cancer abut it was not. It was the disruption in my life, not being able to be there for my children.”

Grace Sauzier, RN, Patient Nurse Navigator, Levine Cancer Institute

Grace Sauzier helped her mother go through breast cancer and now, she helps others on their journey as a nurse navigator. She has seen the benefits of getting screened and catching cancer as early as possible. Ask your doctor if you should get screened. “Early detection, better survival.”

Carolinas HealthCare System Levine Cancer Institute: Project PINK

Levine Cancer Institute’s: Project PINK serves to increase access to life-saving mammography screenings and follow-up care for those who are uninsured. This partnership with Charlotte Radiology and their Mobile Breast Center, provides "breast expertise on wheels," allowing the flexibility to offer these screenings wherever they are needed in a convenient, compassionate environment and at no cost to participants.

  • Levine Cancer Institute Project PINK ensures that participants are taken care of should an issue be identified during a mammogram. Additional funds are raised to support costs for diagnostic exams and biopsy if necessary.
  • Levine Cancer Institute Project PINK PLUS helps provide women who have a specific breast concern or problem and are therefore not eligible for Project Pink. Project PINK PLUS provides participants with more comprehensive evaluations and diagnostic mammograms.

Support from local organizations, community partners and other generous donations to Carolinas Breast Cancer Fund have made these programs possible. Together we are screening, treating and supporting the community in addressing this disparity, no matter who you are, or where you are.

For scheduling through Project Pink contact LCI Outreach or call 980-442-2509.

To donate directly to Project Pink or Project Pink Plus visit the Project Pink site.

Get Screened

  • All teammates should talk to their doctor about whether a mammogram is appropriate.
  • Participating breast health centers will dedicate special hours, evening and weekends, and convenient locations, including on-site mobile mammography units, for Carolinas HealthCare System teammates to receive their mammogram.
  • As an added incentive for teammates, your leaders may accommodate up to two hours of paid time for your screening. Review the Time Out for Prevention Frequently Asked Questions for more information.
  • As part of the CHS LiveWELL Health Plan, your mammogram (including 3D mammograms for those with dense breast tissue) and other well-woman screenings including your colonoscopy are covered at 100 percent.

NorthEast Mobile Mammography Unit

The NorthEast Mobile Mammography Unit will be available at CHS Locations throughout the months of October, November and December.
